The ringtail is one of nine fully protected mammals in the state of California, however, little is known about their relative abundance and patterns of distribution. The species is considered vulnerable due to restricted range and relatively few known populations.

My research to update their distribution map by modeling occurrence data from camera traps began Summer 2024. Please report your observations to the Report Ringtails page to assist in this study!
